Here's what's happening and what our beauty therapists recommend.

If your skin has changed in the last few years drier, more sensitive, suddenly reactive, or just not responding to products it loved for years, you are not imagining it. And you are not alone.
Perimenopause and menopause trigger a cascade of hormonal shifts that directly affect your skin. Yet most of the advice out there is still written for 25-year-old skin. At Beauty Society, we exist to change that.
Here is what is happening to your skin after 40 and what we recommend.

|
"Your skin didn't suddenly become difficult. It became different. And different requires a different approach." |
What Actually Changes in Your Skin After 40
1. Oestrogen Declines and Your Skin Feels It
Oestrogen is one of your skin's best friends. It supports collagen production, regulates oil glands, maintains skin thickness and helps your skin retain moisture. When oestrogen begins to decline in perimenopause, all of these functions are affected at once.
The result? Skin that feels drier than it ever has before. Skin that loses its plumpness. Skin that becomes more reactive and less able to bounce back. Products that worked beautifully for years can suddenly feel like they're sitting on top of your skin rather than absorbing into it.
This is not a product failure. It is a hormonal shift and it calls for a different approach.
2. Collagen Production Slows
Research suggests collagen production declines gradually after 30, and this process may accelerate with hormonal changes in perimenopause. By the time you reach your 40s, you may start to see it. Fine lines deepen. Skin feels less firm. Texture changes in ways that even well-formulated skincare can't fully address topically.
This is where inner wellness can become part of the conversation. Supporting collagen from within through targeted supplements may work alongside your skincare to address what's happening beneath the surface.
3. Your Skin Barrier Weakens
A healthy skin barrier keeps moisture in and irritants out. After 40, hormonal changes can mean the barrier becomes less efficient. Skin that was never sensitive may suddenly become reactive, flushed or easily irritated.
This is why women who have used strong actives such as Retinol, AHAs, BHAs for years can find those same products causing redness or irritation. It's not the product that changed. It's the barrier.
Barrier support becomes a priority at this stage, not an afterthought.
4. Moisture Loss Accelerates
Alongside oestrogen decline, your skin's natural ability to produce and retain moisture decreases. Skin can feel tight immediately after cleansing, or rough and flaky in patches. The lip area, around the eyes and the neck are often the first places women notice this.
Richer, more nourishing formulas ones that support moisture retention rather than simply delivering it can become more important at this stage.
5. Lashes, Brows and Hair Are Also Affected
The hormonal changes of perimenopause affect more than your skin. Many women notice their lashes becoming sparser, their brows thinning, or changes in hair texture and density. Oestrogen plays a role in hair follicle health and when it declines, these changes can follow.
This is one of the most common concerns we hear at Beauty Society, and one of the least openly discussed. You are not imagining your lashes thinning. It is real, it is hormonal, and targeted products may help.

"The beauty industry was largely built for younger skin. After 40, you may benefit from products chosen with your skin's changing biology in mind." |
What Your Skin May Benefit From After 40
Barrier-First Skincare
Before focusing on actives, consider prioritising barrier support. Ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide and fatty acids can help strengthen the barrier, reduce sensitivity and improve your skin's ability to retain moisture. With a well-supported barrier, your other products may work more effectively.
Deeper Hydration
Consider moving from lightweight gel moisturisers to richer, more nourishing formulations. Look for hyaluronic acid layered with ingredients that support moisture retention. If your moisturiser feels like it evaporates within an hour of application, a richer formula may be worth exploring.
Collagen Support From Within and Without
Topical retinoids and peptides can support collagen from the outside. Collagen supplements may support it from within. Used together, they address collagen concerns from multiple angles.
Thoughtful Use of Actives
You don't have to give up retinol or AHAs but you may benefit from using them differently. Lower concentrations, less frequently, always following with barrier support. And if you're having aesthetic treatments, the products you use before and after may play an important role in your experience and recovery.
